Your initial interaction with your Ayurvedic Health Counsellor Intern consists of two parts. Before your first meeting, you will receive a questionnaire pertaining to your current state of health, symptoms, and habits which must be submitted 48 hours prior to your first visit.
  • Initial intake Consultation (Up to 2 hours): Upon your first meeting, the answers on your questionnaire will be discussed. Diagnostic tools such as pulse and tongue observation, as well as structural and functional observation are also included as tools to determine your constitution and imbalance.
  • Report of Findings (Up to 1 hour): Your second meeting will occur 7-10 days after your initial intake. At this meeting you will learn your constitution and imbalance, recommendations for herbal medicine if required, and the first steps in implementing an Ayurvedic lifestyle specific to you. The conversation regarding nutrition will occur at the first follow up visit and will be ongoing.

Follow up visits: $75 for up to one hour  (packages available, contact us for more information)

  • In order to sustainably and successfully implement an Ayurvedic lifestyle, a step by step approach is required. Your pulse and tongue will continue to be monitored. You will learn new diet/nutrition and lifestyle practices at each subsequent visit which build upon your progress, as well as receiving creative support to overcome challenges. Weekly visits are required for the first four follow ups if herbal medicine is recommended. After the first four follow ups, you and your practitioner will decide how often you will meet. You should see this as a 6-12 month process.
  • Depending on the nature of your imbalance, the length of time it has been bothering you, and other factors present in your life, it is important to approach healing with a realistic frame of mind. An imbalance that has been in place for 30 years will most likely not resolve itself in a day or a week. This does not mean that improvements cannot be made, but it is important to realize that Ayurveda is not a quick fix.

Ayurveda does not simply treat symptoms: this system of holistic medicine is powerful because it gets to the root cause of disease. Many people seek out Ayurveda because they have tried many different forms of treatment for a specific concern, and they are running out of options. Although Ayurveda focuses heavily on prevention, Ayurveda also addresses acute and chronic conditions. Ayurveda’s framework for understanding imbalances allows the practitioner to hone in on the root cause of your dis-ease.

Ayurveda treats conditions by looking at how they present in the body, through the Ayurvedic perspective, with Ayurvedic methods. Although you may show up with a specific pre-diagnosed condition, your Ayurvedic Practitioner will not be treating it with western methods or a western perspective. They will approach it through the lens of Ayurveda.

A note from Nadia Miller-Goymer, Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist, Owner of  Northern Lotus Ayurveda:

My training includes working WITH western medicine. Often times very powerful treatment plans emerge when the best of both worlds are utilized. Rest assured, I will never tell you to ignore what your Doctor says, I will never tell you to stop taking your medication out of no-where. My promise to you as my client is that we will work together with your other health care providers to make sure that you are getting the best, most comprehensive care possible. No stone left unturned. Ayurveda is powerful in that it can be the driver of your treatment program, or it can be a compliment to a treatment plan already in place. Each person has their own individual needs, and I promise to honour yours.

Please use the contact page of this website to send me any questions you may have regarding Ayurveda in general or my services. I am always happy to set up a time to chat so all of your questions are answered.

Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Massage): Pamper yourself with a warm oil massage!! Abhyanga is an Ayurvedic massage using warm oil applied in a specific series of strokes to enhance relaxation, and to promote the movement of lymph towards the lymph nodes. The appropriate oil for your current constitution is heated for a soothing effect, which also aids in the absorption of the oil. It is recommended that a hot shower is taken later on in the day to remove excess oil, which then has a cleansing action for the skin. This therapy is highly beneficial to enhance overall well being and to reduce stress. Starting at $135 for 90 minutes. Ayurvedic Abhyanga in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

More about Abhyanga:

Abhyanga is practiced both as a daily self-massage practice, and as a spa-like treatment. Strokes are from the extremeties towards the heart, using light touch. Practicing Abhyanga daily at home has a wide range of health benefits including:

- healthy hair
- increases Ojas (Ayurvedic term for vigor, longevity, endurance, immunity)
- benefits lymphatic drainage and circulation
- healthy joints and strong limbs
- provides nourishment for the whole body
- soft, supple, strong skin
- improved sleep
- reduces stress and tension from the nervous system and musculoskeletal system

Abhyanga for Vata dosha:
- Vata is cold, light, dry, and so oils for vata must be warm, heavy, and moist
- Base Oils: Sesame Oil, Almond Oil
- Essential Oils: Vetiver, Lavender, Clary Sage
- Large amount of oil is used to balance out the cold, dry quality of Vata
- Begin at the top of the head and end with the feet

Abhyanga for Pitta dosha:
- Pitta is hot, oily, light, sharp, and so the best oils for Pitta are light and cooling
- Base Oils: Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil
- Essential Oils: Jasmine, Peppermint, Rose
- Medium to large amount of oil is used based on whether there is burnout & dryness present
- Begin at the top of the head and end with the feet

Abhyanga for Kapha dosha:
- Kapha is heavy, cool, and moist, and so the best oils for Kapha are stimulating and heating
- Base Oils: Almond Oil, Safflower Oil
- Essential Oils: Tea Tree, Orange, Tulsi
- Small amount of oil is used compared to Vata and Pitta dosha due to the heavy, moist nature of Kapha
- Begin at the feet and end with the top of the head

How to Practice Abhyanga at Home:

1) Decide whether to use Vata, Pitta, or Kapha massage oil, or a combination based on the current qualities in your body and mind
2) Warm the oil by placing a small glass bottle of oil in warm water
3) Find a few towels you are willing to get oily: towels that have oil on them will have a slight smell to them depending on which oil is used. It may not come out in the wash.
4) Set up the towels in the bathroom along with the warm oil
5) Apply the oil gently in the direction from the extremeties to the heart. Lengthwise along bones, and in a circular motion around the joints. Make sure to gently massage arm pits, chest, and abdomen. Take about 15 minutes to apply the oil.
6) Let the oil soak in for about 20 or more minutes. An hour is ideal. You can use this time to read or meditate!
7) Have a warm shower, not hot, so that most of the oil is removed but not all
8) Gently dry off

Precautions:

- Oil is slippery! Make sure to wipe off your feet and the floor before walking around.
- Never leave oil unattended if you are using the stove or any electric means of heating.
- If you have any medical conditions please consult your qualified health care provider before you begin.

How to start Abhyanga as a Self Care Routine:

-
Block off a specific time in your schedule where you will do it at the same time each week. Make sure you are being realistic about the date and time.
- Set an alarm on your phone 30 mins before so you can start getting everything ready. The alarm can repeat at the same time every week until it is a habit.
- When you feel like its a habit, maintain this for a few weeks.
- Repeat the process by picking another day to practice Abhyanga, block it off in your schedule, set an alarm, and repeat until its a daily habit!

Clean Up:

- To remove oil from your hair, apply soap/shampoo FIRST, and water SECOND
- If oil is on the floor, it is best to wipe it up or soak it up with a dry towel or paper towel
- Do not pour oil down your drain
- You may decide to buy special laundry detergent
- Wash oily clothes/towels/sheets apart from other items
- When using a washer and dryer, do not put the dryer on the highest heat setting as leftover oil in fabrics may be flammable
